Every Summer we get an influx of College bound 17 yr olds looking to a take a self-defense class. Often when I ask them when are they leaving for College the response is usually something like, ” in 3 weeks”. They seem a little taken aback when I inform them that they are 2 years to late.
Self Defense or Self Protection training is not something that can be learned, in one class. Sure, you might do “a couple of moves” but because of the nature of what happens in a physical attack, one class cannot possibly cover all the potential scenarios.
One must take into account the stresses associated with a verbal or physical assault, the surroundings, number of assailants, location, what you are wearing, your awareness or lack thereof, temperature, even the surface on which you are standing and of course your skill set and response time.
Regular training will help the student to develop skills and techniques and memory recall, among other things and importantly build confidence needed to enable the student to react fast and with the aggressiveness needed to win.
